What do Trendsetters want you to know?

"I would like to be president of Trendsetters 'cuz I am honest, trustworthy and uplifting.  I am a good speaker and encouraging.  I am not afraid to stand up for what is right ... I am not here to be a follower, but I have come to be a leader so that one day you would look up to me and say he changed my life and others and we have changed the community"

~ Eddie, age 14

"The reason I am a Trendsetter is because I feel like I need to help somebody."

~ Christopher, age 9

"I'm a Trendsetter because when I first heard about Trendsetters, I found out that it was about helping.  I wanted to enter so bad ... our ideas were the ones we were going to do ... I think that Trendsetters will help me in the future with my problems."

~ Aracely, age 10

"I'm a Trendsetter because I can help those in need.  I get to make people feel better.  It helps people that are really ill.  It changed my personality.  I feel I am changing the world."

~ Jesse, age 10

What do caring adults want you to know?

"This student club is about asset building for youth.  It is a perfect vehicle for the children I serve at (this school).  Year one of our Trendsetters club has been very successful.  Because I am working with children who could be described as less resilient, I feel I have a unique opportunity to observe our Trendsetters club make an enormous difference in these young lives.

The sense of belonging, of community, I have watched developed over the months, warms my hear.  These children are redefining themselves as leaders.  They are showing an increase in self-esteem, they believe more in themselves, and are beginning to identify their own strengths and talents.  Children, who ordinarily would not be together in the same setting, are helping and looking out for each other.  For example, one of our younger Trendsetters wanted to run for office.  When it
came time for him to get up and make his speech, he froze.  One of the older members of the club immediately got up and went to his assistance.  He encouraged and helped the younger boy to communicate his message to the group.  I see these children going out of their way to help each other in many different ways.  They spell words for each other, give positive feedback when seeing an activity a peer has completed, and remind each other of the appropriate manners and actions to choose while meeting.  They laugh and sing together.  They share successes.

(Our Trendsetters) are eager to reach out to the community, and beyond.  They are excited to become involved in helping children in other countries have the advantage of schooling and supplies.  They generate ideas about how to spread kindness and caring actions.
Day after day I see the children become more and more empowered.

My Trendsetters are defining themselves as leaders.  Seeing them step forward as leaders is amazing and wonderful to behold.  I give credit to this asset building club program for having a lot to do with inspiring our students.

I'm looking forward to expanding the Trendsetters through Education in this next year.  The children have already begun to ask about next year's plans."

~ Peggy, School Counselor

"I am writing in regard to the Trendsetters program.  My sons, ages 12 and 13, have been involved with this incredible program for the past two years.  It has given my boys the opportunity to be involved in so many positive experiences within the community that without this program they would not have had.  I hope that this program will continue throughout all schools and that all children could have this great opportunity to learn, experience, and help guide them to be a more helpful and caring individual with a positive outlook for their future."

~ Johnna, Parent

"This letter is in support of the Trendsetters through Education club.  Trendsetters have served several different elementary schools ... it has been my experience that the Trendsetters through Education club has had a positive impact on the individual students and the school where it was implemented.

As Superintendent ... I appreciate ... members of our community coming together to assist and support our students and their families.  At this time in our state's financial crisis, it is more important that community-based groups involve themselves in reaching out to our youth.  With looming budget cuts, city and school funding is directed to core missions leaving limited or no funds for supplementary services and after-school programs.  Reductions in tutoring programs, service learning opportunities, and recreational opportunities are leaving many students in unsupervised, unproductive settings.

Trendsetters through Education club has had positive results in building assets in youth.  The youth involved in this club have sponsored service projects and involved other youth in their neighborhoods to help the elderly and their neighbors in need.  Trendsetters through Education club has brought youth of all ages together to plan, host and evaluate neighborhood community events.  This involvement has had a positive impact on the individuals as well as the group as a whole.

I would welcome the Trendsetters through Education club at additional (public) school sites."

~ Debra, Superintendent

"The kids really benefit from the organization and individual clubs have a waiting list of kids wanting to get into the program.  The demand is overwhelming."

~ Peggy, Parent Education Specialist

"Trendsetters is unique because it engages youth in community service projects that they deem important.  It's amazing to see how seriously the kids take these projects and get behind them.  Their enthusiasm and excitement is inspiring."

~ Karla, Director Risk Control and Systems, and Community Volunteer

"This is exactly what our kids need.  Many programs offer catchy phrases and slogans; Trendsetters offers real experiences."

~ Sean, America's Promise to Youth
